The Aussies Get it Right

For those who believe that the doctrine of multiculturalism is a lot of leftist claptrap, it has been great fun to watch Australian Prime Minister John Howard poke holes in the sacred tenets of that pernicious and divisive ideology.
His latest rebuke to those who worship at the altar of separateness and demand special treatment for the inculcation of their alien cultural mores in a Westernized society will occur later this week.
In a speech prepared for Australia Day, Howard is expected to argue that people who come to his country from abroad to live should adopt the norms and mores of Australia and not just occupy real estate. His comments should be viewed in the context of the unique nature of Australian citizenship.
Last year, Howard had some refreshing comments for those Muslim immigrants who wished to be governed within Australia by Sharia Law. Without mincing any words, Howard told them that if that is what they wanted, they should pack up and leave Australia.
His latest assault on the proselytizers of multiculturalist dogma include sacking the Minister of the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs and renaming it the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
Howard is astute enough to realize that no matter how noble and high-minded the embrace of multiculturalism sounds, in practice, it inevitably leads to balkanization.
From the beginning, Australia has been a stalwart ally of the United States in the War against Terror. As British Prime Minister Tony Blair becomes increasingly isolated within Great Britain, the United States should look to the Southern Pacific and the land Down Under for a reliable partner that will remain steadfast.
