Newsweek’s Evan Thomas: Obama, “a sort of God”

Could Newsweek cheapen its journalistic brand and debase itself any further? The latest evidence that this hard-left publication has made a conscious decision to be the official journal of Obama worship was the pronouncement, by editor Evan Thomas, that Obama is sort of God. Here’s the clip:

If you think that the unabashed idolatry of Evan Thomas is the exception rather than the rule at Newsweek, consider this descriptive prose, penned recently by managing editor Jon Meacham:

…Abruptly but gracefully, the president broke toward the spectators; gathered journalists and security scurried to follow his lead. He shook every outstretched hand and, reaching the end of the line, deftly avoided eye contact with the gaggle of reporters. As he turned to make the walk back to Air Force One, a breeze blew—and everyone scurried anew, to keep up with him.

It was that kind of day—and it has been that kind of presidency: Barack Obama, moving as he wishes to move, and the world bending itself to him.

The world bending itself to him?  When two of its principal editors as so demonstrably in the tank for Obama, what is left of their already eroding credibility?

Both incidents indicate that Newsweek continues in its quest to be the laughingstock of America’s struggling newsweekly magazines. They seem utterly obliviousness to the one-dimensionality of their reporting, editorializing, and overall content. Their recipe for success in the internet age and in a media environment in which the reach and influence of newsweeklies has eroded? Substantially raise the price of their publication and drastically reduce its circulation.

No matter how they wish to characterize their reincarnation, whether to position themselves as a “thought leader”, or as a journal to interpret the news, the question is: will news consumers pay to digest such nonsense when they can obtain the same Obama fawning for free by tuning into MSNBC on any given evening?

I think the answer is no. My prediction? In eighteen months, due to a lack of buyers for their product, Newsweek will be forced to close shop…
