The Specter of Reviving Comprehensive Immigration Reform Under A McCain Presidency

For many true conservatives, McCain’s equivocation on the question of  border security is maddening. Indeed, for some, it has proven to be the straw that has broken the camel’s back. How can many conservatives, deal with the maddening apostasy of John McCain on so many substantive and critical issues? For me, It is very simple really: pragmatism. John McCain is not a true conservative. He never has been, and he never will be. When one reconciles this ineluctable fact with the available choices for President, McCain, with all his blemishes, is still the best option.

When it comes to the issue of illegal immigration, I can take comfort in the fact that as long as there are those, such as Republican Senator Jeff Sessions, who believe in the concept of national sovereignty and the right of citizens to have their borders secure, the prospect of passing Comprehensive Immigration Reform is remote. The fact of the matter is that despite McCain’s purported epiphany on this issue, the reality is that  when it comes to securing the borders, McCain is soft as a grape. Although McCain seems to relish poking a stick in the eye of conservatives, particularly on issues of illegal immigration, here is a thought that conservatives should succor: Should he attempt to resuscitate his Amnesty boondoggle, conservatives will be in a a position, much as they did to President Geroge Bush, to gladly return the favor.

While as a conservative, I will have to clutch both nostrils tightly in the voting booth, I can pull the lever for McCain, confident that, in an imperfect world, he will always be the lesser of two evils. For, I shudder to think of the prospect of the rank amateur, former community organizer, Obama, extending his on-the-job training on matters of grave importance to the nation’s security while in the White House. This man is utterly clueless and has the potential to do the nation grave harm. And, when it comes to illegal immigration, if such a thing is possible, the multi-cultural, New Age Leftist Obama’s position on securing the borders is worse than that of McCain.
